Engagement Through Social Media for Nonprofit Organizations

Written on February 8th, 2012 by Matthew Alberto

Social media for nonprofits can be an excellent to for engagement.

For example, a new site called IHadCancer.com is using social media to help cancer survivors deal with life through shared experiences. This site is distinct from the many sites dedicated to cancer fundraising, research and advocacy in the sense that it allows users to benefit directly from the experiences of others who have been in similar situations.

Sharing experiences can be a great source of hope and support, as well as practical information that can be very useful. Many older Americans who have cancer can now benefit from this resource as they become more engaged in the social media world. The site is for people of all ages, though, and fills a gap in support which many people face.

While cancer patients may have extremely supportive family and friends, this support group often cannot understand their experience in the way that someone who has been through it can.
